Vaping has gained popularity over the years because it is considered safer and prevents the harmful effects of smoking. It is also not as restricted in most premises like smoking and does not leave one with the odour of smoke. However, it has some side-effects, and one of them is called vaper’s tongue.

Vaper’s tongue defined

Vaper’s tongue refers to a wide range of taste-related problems which range from strange tastes in your favourite vape flavour to losing taste for all or the majority of foods and drinks. Losing the taste of a specific flavour is very common and is almost a universal condition since most vapers will experience it from time to time. It normally lasts between 1 and 3 days but may continue for up to two weeks. On the other hand, losing the taste of almost everything is a more serious case and may be brought about by dehydration, sicknesses, or vitamin deficiency.

Possible causes of vaper’s tongue

Here are some of the things that may cause vaper’s tongue:

The olfactory issue: The sense of olfaction, or smell as it is commonly known, is one of the major things that can cause vaper’s tongue. Did you know that your nose handles about 70% of the task of realizing flavours? Other than basic tastes – sweet, bitter, salty, sour and umami –which are determined by the taste buds, the sense of smell performs the more detailed taste distinction. Exposure to the same flavour for a long time makes the olifactory sense lose its ability momentarily, making you not to recognize the flavour clearly after vaping for a while.

Dehydration: Your sense of taste is primarily dependent on the taste buds distributed all over the tongue. The taste buds need saliva to execute their function. If you vape excessively, your tongue may suffer fatigue, leading to dry mouth and the impaired functioning of your taste buds.

Smoking: Your senses of taste and smell could be adversely affected by smoking if you are still a smoker or have recently quit. The good news is that the symptoms can be cured within a month after you stop smoking. You will recover from vaper’s tongue and continue enjoying your favourite vape flavours.
